Problems of the Working College Student Essay

I work thrity-five hours a week at a warehouse in Ontario California. When I first registered for college classes, I figured college would be fairly easy to fit into my schedule. After all, I thought, college students are not in class all day, like high school students are. So, I assumed the twelve hours a week I’d spend in class wouldn’t be too much of a load. But I was in for a big surprise. My first semester at college showed me that students who work while going to college face problems at school, at work, and at home. First of all, students who try to juggle job and school responsibilities find trouble at school. Early morning classes, for example, are particularly difficult for me. Because I work every week night from six to midnight, I don’t get home until 1:00 a. m. , and I can’t fall asleep until 2:00 a. m. or later. Consequently, I am too tired to pay attention in my eight o’clock class. Once, I even fell asleep in that class and my Professor asked me to leave for the day. Not only was this an embarrassment for myself, but it also cost me to miss the day’s assignment not to mention being marked as absent for the day. Sometimes student’s work hours create other conflicts. For instance in my experience they cut into my study time, so I have little time to do all the assigned reading and homework. I get behind in the assignments, and I never seem to have enough time to catch up. As a result, my grades are not as good as they could be. To avoid these kind of experience’s students have to be organized, and have time management or they may get overwhelm in their daily schedule. Because students both work and go to school, they can have problems doing well with their education. But work can also suffer when workers attend college. Students can bring school into the work place. I’ve been guilty of this practice and have paid the price. One night I tried to study at work, but my supervisor caught me reading my college textbook at my work station this was a problem, and after the supervisor asked me to put my book away and get back to work I was reprimanded, and now my supervisor doesn’t trust me. Sometimes students come to work very tired, which is another problem. For example when I don’t get enough sleep I can become rude to fellow co-workers, and then the rudeness can get me into trouble. I remember one particular time a co-worker reported me because I was sarcastic to her. She had spent a half hour complaining about my job performance and I had been too tired to be patient and I lost my temper. Once again, my supervisor reprimanded me and I was asked to leave for the night. Another time, school interfered with my job when I had to leave work early to take a make-up test at school. I know my supervisor was unhappy with me then, too. Arranging a schedule that will fit the needs of schooling is a solution to combat this problem. Working college students can also suffer outside of classes and the workplace. For example my schedule illustrates the conflicts of trying to take on too many duties. Since I work nights during the week, the weekends are a more convenient time that I can study. Because I have to use my weekends to do school work, I can’t do other things. My apartment is a mess since I have no time to clean it. Worse, my girlfriend is threatening to leave me because I have no social life. We never even go out like we once used to now when she comes over, I am too busy studying. However the rewards of earning a college degree in this economy can be the difference between having a job and having a career. Students who have sacrificed their time with hard work and determination are more likely to earn that degree. Students, who have responsibilities at home, work and college can face a cycle of stress. For example, I am constantly racing around trying to manage my time, and I can’t break the cycle. I want a college education, and I must have a job to pay my tuition and living expenses. The only way students can manage is to learn to manage their time. For example after speaking with my supervisor about the quest for a higher education he understands my situation and has rearranged a work schedule to fit the needs of my schooling. Now in my third semester at college, I’ve realized that working students have to be very organized to cope with the responsibilities of college, work, and home.

Red Scarf Girl

Feelings of Sympathy There is nothing worse than the act of betrayal. Jiang Ji-li, a girl who was always praised by her teachers and always felt warmth in her home started to be exposed to the real world and how people can walk away from those who were there for them their whole life and treated as if they were non existent. She never thought that her fellow peers could deceive her, betray her. Who would have ever thought that the same people who Jiang Ji-li kindly helped with their home work could easily point their guns at her.Not only does the reader feel sympathetic towards Jiang Ji-li but also fury towards the students and how she was treated because of her family's black status. Jiang Ji-li is not really not to blame for what kind of traits she bears or her stance, she was babied and never really let out of her cage into the wild where she could see things for herself. Jiang Ji-li's weak character also contributes to the kind of mood the author feels during the time he/she read s the book.Ji-li, by the way she acts, she seems very fragile and she is not one that can easily accept what negative things that are said about her. Ji-li thinks that there is only good things and good people in the world. If it's not said or pointed out to her, she would never have noticed it. She is too carefree, allowing herself to think that there are only harmless people, that they would never hurt her until there was a da-zi-bao written about her, â€Å"Ke Cheng-li doesn't like working-class kids. He only likes rich kids†¦We have to ask the question, What is the relationship between them after all? † If she had been a very strong girl, knew where she stood and didn't care what others said about her or her family, the reader would have felt a different mood. Though there are other factors that contribute to the story, for instance â€Å"setting. † In this novel, it talks about the Cultural Revolution of Chairman Mao whose intention was to do good things to C hina starting by ridding the Four Olds and bringing in the Four News.Without this historical time period in the book, there would be no chaos in the country, and there would have been no class status that separated the rich from the working-class families. The setting affects the mood of the reader. If the author of the novel chose to change the setting and only the setting, there would be a huge to the mood the reader feels. â€Å"Suddenly I wished that I had been born into a different family. I hated Grandpa for being a landlord,† one cannot help but feel sympathetic towards Ji-li, who was not yet ready to face the cruel world. It's unimaginable how much anger can be inside her especially if she hates someone she has never met, which makes the reader feel pity for her. How hurt she must be, a girl always showered with warmth, love and compliments now being thrown dirt on. Throughout the book, I've felt sympathy towards Ji-li. She tries very hard to do what's right, and aims to be successful but her black class status held her back. Always fearing that people will make fun of her black class status, she shied away from doing things she wanted to do.In the epilogue of the book, even though Chairman Mao had died, her status continued to follow her, refraining her family to move forward, and remain under those who had better statuses. Some might feel fury towards the movement, how it was not right because it allowed many others, besides the Jiang family to suffer because of criticism due to their wealthy lifestyle or committing other â€Å"crimes. † What might make the reader feel especially sympathetic towards Ji-li's situation is how she was confused about what to do, she was suffering and she was told she had two roads she could take. She could either leave her parents and their family's black status or she could stay with her family and remain loyal. Ji-li didn't have a choice, she didn't choose to be born into the kind of family she was born in. Why did it matter that her grandfather was a landlord? She wasn't. The main contribution to the mood, in my opinion was probably the traits that Ji-li bear. What she felt, the readers could feel because it was her point of view that they looked at.

Relationships Are All About Love, Happiness, And Support

Relationships are all about love, happiness, and support. It is also a way of taking the time to know your significant other in ways that are personal and different than any other type of relationship that you can have. Being in a military relationship is different than other relationships, the struggles and not to mention the distance that is faced while being in one. Those who are within a long distance relationship are familiar with about the hardships that are faced. Use of Symbolism and Foreshadowing in Flannery OConnors...

The Use of Foreshadowing and Symbolism in â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find† When an author writes a story, he or she will generally use different writing techniques to create the piece. These techniques have the ability to turn a story into something truly unique, as they allow the story to unfold in it’s own way. In the short story â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find†, author Flannery O’Connor used the techniques of symbolism and foreshadowing throughout the entire piece to create a deeply captivating story, as so many of the details mentioned in the beginning of the story are glimpses of the end. The foreshadowing in â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find† can be seen almost immediately. Within the first paragraph, the protagonist known as â€Å"the†¦show more content†¦This is very specific foreshadowing, because in the end of the story, all five on the trip die, and it seems that will lead to the end of their family line. O’Connor also e xplains how the Grandmother dressed for the trip; she wore a navy dress, white gloves, and a formal hat. The reading states â€Å"In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady.†(O’Connor 496). Not only is this foreshadowing, but the grandmother’s outfit can also be seen as a symbol of her skewed moral code and selfishness. When the grandmother carefully chose the outfit for this trip, she was solely concerned with how she would appear in the event that she died on her trip. She was not at all disturbed by the fact that, in the event that there was an accident, her son and grandchildren would die as well. In the same paragraph that discusses the grandmother’s outfit, the colors red, blue, purple, and green are introduced. These colors are mentioned for the first time when discussing the grandmother’s clothes and the mother’s kerchief, and they repeated throughout the entire story. A conne ction can certainly be seen with the grandmother’s blue dress, because when the reader is first introduced to The Misfit, he is wearing blue jeans, and after his sidekicks kill Bailey, they take his shirt embroidered with blue parrots. Do you think they are sufficient, or does the company need to do more? As BP has previously lost sight of its responsibilities to the environment, employees ,society and shareholders and they have neglected legal (Illinois case) and social environment (Prudhoe Bay) in their strategy which resulted in several disasters and caused them to pay millions of dollars penalties and damaged their reputation. BP has taken major steps toward repairing its image. BP changed their corporate mission goals and objectives and took deep consideration to environment and social responsibilities that drive all its global business units to follow same strategy in their missions and goals and took initiatives to prove consistency in new promises: * Changed their name to BP and removed petroleum to focus on full spectrum of energy resources. * First global energy firm to announce its recognition of greenhouse effect. * Launched BP code of conduct and published it globally in website to be strictly followed by all BP employees. * Launched BP alternative Energy business in 2005 Wind-Solar-Biofuels). * Heavily invested in environmental care in their projects (Alaska – Algeria) through the specialized BPs remediation management team. * Stakeholder Education of environmental awareness and launching Carbon footprint kit which was highly perceived accordingly BP was awarded in 2007 (IVCA) awards. I think what BP has done so far to repair its image is go od but most important that they keep sustaining the same strategy regardless of economy or corporate management changes and they need to do more effort to make sure that code of conduct is strictly applied worldwide. . Do you believe that BP Code of Conduct will prevent future misconduct ? Why or why not? Code of conduct is essential to be written and published for any global company but most important is how to make sure its implemented and nobody is violating it and causing disasters. From my opinion that BP publishing code of conduct in 2005 was not enough and the evidence for that was disasters happened later 2006 – 2007 and finally 2010 (Oil spill in Gulf of Mexico) Below case demonstrating and emphasizing my opinion. What BP was missing on Deepwater Horizon: a whistleblower Oil spill in Gulf of Mexico By Eleanor Bloxham, contributorJune 22, 2010: 4:25 AM ET FORTUNE- The opening letter from BP CEO Tony Hayward to the BP Code of Conduct reads: If you are unsure of what to do in particular circumstances or concerned that the code is being broken, you have a responsibility to speak up. The code explains the mechanisms to do this . . . and the protections to ensure that retaliation against those who do speak up will not be tolerated. However after CEO speech some rig survivors started to speak and they said It was always understood that you could get fired if you raised safety concerns that might delay drilling. Some co-workers had been fired for speaking out. Taking this case as an example, BP should have raised culture of its employees by making seminars and speeches done by top management to ensure importance of implementing code of conduct and how company will protect its employees or even reward them form preventing rules getting broken even if it requires shutting off a rig and loosing a lot of money. BP has started already to prove its seriousness to its stakeholders regarding ethics and environment issues by implementing environmental awareness programs to stakeholders and establishing (BPES) BP educational s ervice who initiated the Carbon Footprint Toolkit which was later implemented in High schools in Britain and increased envormental awareness form 62 to 89 percent and this project got international award in 2007 From my opinion BP should launch frequent seminars for its stakeholders showing its contribution in global environment like (Alaska –Algeria amp; CSS initiative) and saving energy projects like BP Zhuhai and showing impact of this success stories on environment and society nevertheless saving million of dollars results to emphasize to its stakeholders that being environmentally sustainable and ethically responsible is not only the right thing to do but also can be profitable and its becoming one of BP goals and strategies and even becoming on of their competitive edge and thrive.
